I've been making a lot of boxes lately and thought I would share one that I really liked.
James from Vector Art 3D inspired me to make a carving of the last Supper with a Vcarve back ground of the room and inlayed figures. I was reading all I could find on the last Supper in the forum and found the following thread by James.
http://www.vectric.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3012&hilit=last+supper
I downloaded the free Vcarve files, purchased the Last Supper models from Vector Art 3D files and layout the box.
I wanted to do this on a box lid so I used the box design that was designed by Michael Tyler from the Vectric project of the month for March 2011. I really like the box Michael designed, it gives you quite a bit of room to carve whatever you want. My wife likes it because it's large enough to use in decorating and gives a nice presence.
Thanks to Michael T and James B and of course Vectric for the inspiration and a program that's fantastic.
Thanks for looking.

Mark,
That is some beautiful work! If I can get from wanting to cut steel on my Cobra I want to make something similar. It will go to the top of the list. Keep up the good work.

Very nice Mark. I have the same Last Supper file, but have not cut it yet. I'm going to wait for my new Stinger before I do.
What did you finish it with?

Thanks for all the complements , it sure is gratifying when things start to work the way you plan them.
Mick- I used walnut for the main box and hard maple for the inlay of the figures. I used gold paint in the text after spraying with a sealer and sanded the text to remove the sloppy painting. It seem to work pretty well except the gold paint didn't show up as much as I would have liked but you can still read it.
It's really nice to learn from these forums, it sure makes you feel like you're a part of a group.
Thank you all,
Mark

Thanks for the information on your wood choice and the process you used, what size bit did you use to cutout the "Last Supper" inlay.

Hi Mick,
My final finishing bit was a 1/16" ball nose and it took 4 to 5 hours to cut with a 8 % stepover. I did a roughing pass with a 1/4" ball nose with a fairly large stepover of maybe 40 % and it took about 30 minutes. I also don't usually run the feeds over 250 to 300 so others may be able to run it faster. I didn't really keep very good timing on the cuts so I may be off a bit on those times.
They take quite a while to cut but I'm usually preparing other wood or assembling something so it doesn't matter to much.
