That's interesting.
It's funny, almost everything I use is made in America.
Gorilla Glue ( Ohio)
CAMaster (Georgia)
Titebond ( Ohio)
Ford FX2 ( Kansas City)
Toyota Camry ( Georgetown KY)
Corafoam ( Texas)
Porter Paints ( Pennsylvania)
Ben Moore primer ( New Jersey)
Olympic MDO (Washington)
Hartco sandmask (Ohio)
Gold Leaf (Illinois)
Maybe I should start flying the Stars & Stripes here........
Although I agree in principle with this approach, both America & Canada have been bombarded with cheap imports & there are more people who will buy "cheap" than will buy "quality". We brought this on ourselves.
Trade between countries is a good thing, as long as it's reciprocal. Having neighbours with a similar standard of living is also a good thing ....... America spends MUCH more defending its southern border than its northern. Relatively few Canadians are trying to get into the US to work illegally. I don't even want to work there legally ...... I much prefer our healthcare system.
I have to admit, it annoys me that my Milwaukee tools were all made in China. My DeWalt chop saw was made in Mexico & my Sony camera was made in Japan. I always buy the best I can afford.
My philosophy is that the US-Canada border is just an annoyance & that if I purchase something in the US rather than here, a prosperous America usually results in a prosperous Canada. There are a lot of things that just aren't made in Canada ( we're about the same population as California) & we have no choice but to import. The US is by far our preferred source.
I hope it stays that way.
If anyone is trying to read "political" into this .... don't.

T.R. I live in Manitoba and my wife is American. Does that count. Actually my kids are all dual citizens and I do prefer our health care. My Brothers have a company in Colorada so I do see both sides and I enjoy both countries but prefer to live here. The company I work for (glulam mfg.) does a lot of buisness in the US and the buy America act does cause us problems some times. Most of the time it is a very agreeable exchange.

Mick, do you say "eh", crave Tim Hortons & Alexander Keith's?
If so you're one of us. [lol]
For the rest of you guys who don't know.........
Tim Horton was Canada's first Prime Minister. He invented donuts, built the Canadian Pacific Railroad all by himself whilst being the ONLY hockey player for the Toronto Maple Leaf.
Our 2nd Prime Minister was Alexander Keith. He invented beer. Need I say more...........

Last June my company set Momma and I to Banff, so wanting to blend with the locals I picked up Rosetta stone to learn the local language and the entire cd just said "Eh" at the beginning and end of each sentence! the rest was in North American!![lol]
Only kidding everyone we met was wonderful and we are planing on going back in a few years.[fantastic]

I've been saying the same thing for years and really hope Americans (and Canadians) wake up soon because while I realize it's a complicated matter to identify the point, there will eventually come a point of no return. Your comment about reciprocal trade is right on the money. It's the widespread offshore/nearshore "trade" which is hardly reciprocal, including sending much/most of our software and hardware development and support services overseas that is going to ruin us if it doesn't get turned around soon.

Bob, I believe I heard it called "the Wal-Mart Phenomenon" somewhere.
There is some good stuff made outside of North America & competition isn't a bad thing in that it keeps the level of quality up. Lets face it, almost every automaker started out making cheap junk but unless their quality improved, they didn't get any repeat business. The ones who prosper here create a lot of jobs ....... even ones who don't assemble here.
Low quality stuff pisses me off, no matter where it originates. I don't have expensive tastes by any means but I want good value for my money. I want a vehicle to run for 200,000 miles, a stove & fridge to last at least 15 years & my power tools to be repairable.
Think back on how times have changed. Our textile industry has been decimated by cheap imports. A lot of our heavy industry has suffered the same fate. The flip side ...... Cleveland & Pittsburg are a lot cleaner than they were 40 years ago. The auto industry is gradually recovering but it took offshore competition to get the big 3 to finally start making a good sturdy small car that gives 40mpg & will last 200k.
Everyone in the world wants our Western standard of living. We can't blame them for that but it shouldn't come at the expense of our own. Every new exporting country starts out with cheap stuff, to build market share, & then the quality gets comparable. As their workforce gains wealth, their wages go up & soon they're not the cheapest anymore. Right now, we're seeing the Chinese do to Korea what they did to Japan what they did to the US & Canada.
I don't have the education to be an economist so I'll get off my soapbox now. I'll continue to buy the best I can afford, no matter where it originates. Most of the time that'll either be companies like CAMaster, American companies that assemble offshore but control & maintain quality, or foreign companies who have factories here. It'll absolutely never be the cheapest.....

The ironic thing here is that Wal-Mart is packed with union shoppers.
Wanting the highest wages, but only willing to spend the least amount.

Nick, Mike's queens are 6'3" tall not counting their stilettos, have pink mini-skirts, a beer belly & 5 O'clock shadow.
You'd better stay away from Northeast Philly if you thought the chick in Salida was hot![lol]
Sorry Mike, I posted that other silliness & forgot to answer your post. I think I had some witty comeback but it couldn't have been that witty or memorable or I'd remember it now[embar]
