Jim,
Were you using the vacuum table for this part? If you were, I can vouch for how useless a vacuum is when milling small parts.
I have not used a vacuum table in over 2 years because of this.

i had it secured in jigs but milled most of it (the jig) in the roughing, i will screw them down from behind in the future. which was my first thought and you are right vacuum is worth less for this

This does not make you stupid, it makes you smarter and more experienced to all the little things that makes CNC such a wonderful part of our lives. As these things happen to you, you invent new and improved tricks to hold things in place. I have hundreds of different jigs and fixtures for securing work pieces.
Think of your CNC as an overhead pin router. Remember all the different jigs you had for one of those?

I've been there, before.
For stuff like that, I usually attach (screw or glue) my stock piece to a hunk of plywood or aluminum, then screw the plywood or aluminum down to my spoil board. The only asterisk that goes with this method is to be sure not to have a screw going through the part of the stock that you are removing.
