I don't understand "colors to fit vectors to"

I have been practicing importing jpeg files to vcarve and the result is usually a vector file that doesn't share the detail of the original picture. Is there a certain size resolution I need to import? The biggest puzzle is the "colors to fit vectors to". I don't understand this section. I will post this on the forum.
