View Full Version : A axis stepper torque can I increase it?

So I have a 6 in rond chunk of maple 32in long in the rotary and I start roughing it.

I'm watching and it is pulling the rotary around while cutting in the y direction. I stop the program and grab the part. I can twist it while the stepper has power to it.

Is there a way to up the torque with settings in the driver so it won't spin the stepper while cutting?

Thanks,
Nick

If it is belt drive I suggest you go to a gear drive, Even with a gear drive however, there will be some slippage.

Guy,
Could you twist the part against the power of the stepper? The belt does not slip at all.

Depending on how much pressure you apply you can actually trip the stepper.

Even with the gear drive I had some depends moments and there was twisting albeit minimal and only on roughing. A lot of what you do will depend on how you program. If you are hogging out more than the stepper can handle it is going to twist. Think of a lawn mower is tall grass.

Also if you are cutting across the axis, you will get less spin. If you are cutting with the axis, the bit can grab long grain and cause twisting and pulling along the x axis or y depending on how your machine is configured. You could go to a larger stepper are a planetary gear system which would give you more hold power but would not be impervious to twisting and tripping.

When in doubt, less bite on the bit.
