  • New Build

    Hey Guys & Gals...
I am in the process of building a replacement for my not so old, but definitely too blue home machine. Joey and I were talking and he suggested I post pics on CAMHeads. I will take a few along the way, but wanted to get feedback from you the Owners of our machines.

My reasons for questions are as follows:
    1) I seldom use the OEM configuration for any OEM part. I use what I think MIGHT be better to find out if it really is.

    2) I will use motors, drives etc from our suppliers, but not always the same as the production models.

    3) I do not wish that anyone interprets my experimenting as a statement that feel our product needs improvement. I just like to experiment and do this with my own checkbook. Sometimes it works out well.

    4) Note that most of the modifications done to my former blue machines were out of necessity as I tried to make a living with them cutting cabinets and wood parts. Now putzing with CNC machines at home is my hobby.

    5) There is no "my router is bigger than your router" involved here. I would do this to stir juices in those of you that are inventive and give confidence to those that need a little push. Most ideas used by mfgr's are submitted by the user base. My stuff may wake up your stuff.

So..... would you like to (a) see pics and specs of the build, or (b) a few pics at the end when its running, or (c) keep them to myself, as they are really not relevant to the mainstream machines in use.

    Thanks, GC

Gary, I would love to see "(a) see pics and specs of the build" - as you build it.

      Thanks

Thanks for the vote(s) of confidence. I will post up a few pics of current progress.

Machine is a small format, sized the same as an SR-34, but a few inches taller for my back. Milled weldment & 4" steel rec tube, same as the Cobra.

Ballscrew drive, 20mm on the X & Y, 15mm on the Z. Power by 1700 oz in closed loop steppers. I am using a retro "Vic Edelbrock" satin aluminum and satin black finish on many of the aluminum parts. Milled in decorative recess' painted satin black and then watersanded with 320 to remove overspray. All linear rails, bearings, etc. are same as the production units. Here's a few pics:

                              Bruce...
My designs, but I am getting a lot of info from Joey, Frank, Luke and Brit. The sideplates (and soon gantry beam) were machined on the HAAS at work by Brit, the rest I am cutting at home.
