Thanks chuck, means something coming from a Camhead.
I'm always mixed about using a highly figured species like bocote for 3d, the grain is just so busy and all over the place it often distracts from the model, but cutting it out and fixing it to a dissimilar board was just the ticket, it needed that contrast. Sometimes good things are stumbled on unplanned.
Looking at the pic looks like I need a bit more finish, the burning process is hard on the wood, plus I did try an epoxy fill and you can barely see any, the cracks were full so it must have soaked in and needed a 2nd application. Then I had to sand the heck out of it to get the epoxy film off the board, and of course you can't sand much else you'll obliterate the very fine details of the burn, there is probably an easier and better way. I did seal it a bit with a clear coat before the epoxy so at least it didn't stain much.

I think my personal fav is the yellowheart one is post #12, that was a stunner [sold that one]. Recently tried to get more yellowheart, I had a huge plank of it about 12ft, 2" thick and 16" wide, lasted a couple years but I ran out and called woodcraft where I got it from, the guy told me that yellowheart has been declared an endangered species and is nearly impossible to get now, very depressing. I called a mill and they said the same, looked around online and all you can get are smaller chunks for knife scales ect, so it looks like I am screwed unless I luck into a plank.

thanks Gary, here it is after another matte clear coat, much better it needed it - My only regret is I should have done just a little more burning towards the top, most of the best burns are covered by the model, which I knew in advance of course
