  • Magnetic Dust Boot

**edit - please see post #17 for the updated version **

To say we were underwhelmed with the included dust boot is an understatement.. Luckily, we are engineers at an up-and-coming 3D Printer manufacturer. So I designed a better one and ~18 hours later, it's installed on our machine!

Here are a few photos. It is made out of ABS (think Lego) and the base attaches directly to the spindle which doesn't block the vents for the forced air at the bottom. The boot magnetically attaches to the base and the coupler works as strain relief.

We might be inclined to make some of these to sell if there is interest, but know this is specific designed for the 5HP HSD spindle and we have no plans in going into the "dust boot" business. However, my son might be interested in designing/making other sizes if there is a demand..

That's very nicely designed and executed!

Is there a camera mount so I can watch the cutting under the boot? Seems to look very nice. Sounds like the spindle vents are not blocked at all. I like that a lot. My machine is smaller but I need a new boot.

Nice. I would order one if it used the existing cam-lock feature on the spindle support to allow for up/down adjustment.

Interesting design. How does it handle different bit heights? I have to use up to 3 spacers with my Kent Shoe to accommodate different bit heights.

The bottom piece is hollow for the air. I assume you had to print it with supports?

We chose to not use the cam lock for height adjustment as we really wanted to seal off above the bit as much as possible. I’m printing both a 1/2” and 1” spacer now just for longer bits.

Yes, the air flows through the boot and it is hollow inside- supports were used to do this.

We’ll hopefully be putting it to the test over the weekend and will report back on the results.

I failed to mention the boot was specifically designed to also accept our ER32 dust extraction collet. We are eager to test this as well..

Conceivably, a pin-hole type video camera might be able to be used for this application with a little creativity.

I retrifited mine a decade ago with magnets, it worked so well i have used the prototype all these years, I have an ATC so i had to maintain the door to open for a bit change and i have been wanting to makle it better recently

having the collection draw at the bit is a gig asset and your design and use of 3d printing is exceptional !

I bought a collector collet but it pulverized the dust screamed and like a stuck banshee

I've wondered about those extraction collets, but was told not to use them on a 5hp spindle because they are underpowered for that. Interested to hear how yours works!

Love your dust boot. Wish something like that could be used with an ATC.

Just tested the dust extraction collet and yeah, at 24k rpm it absolutely screams! But was tolerable at 18k. We will only be using it every once in awhile for flattening the spoil board, etc..

So the boot works incredibly well - there is really no reason for the dust extraction collet.

It actually works so well that I'm concerned the MQL system might be negatively affected as the oil is simply sucked up before it can reach the bit! Does anyone have experience with the MQL system and dust extraction? I'm going to reach out to MagLube as well..

**edit** I wasn't thinking.. I can do some testing by running the MQL system with and without dust extraction to compare the amount of oil collected on the bit.

Looks like a great design. Are there plans to sell them that would work with the 3KW spindle?
