I just upgraded my Camaster shop computer to 12gb of memory and a 1 terabyte M.2 HD. I used Acronis to clone the old disk to the new and everything went smoothly. I was also having some difficulty booting the machine so I replaced the CMOS battery on the MB. All issues solved and the machine boots up in about 15 seconds. Everything seems to respond much faster now. Especially Aspire. It really feels good to have an exact duplicate of the HD for backup for JIC.....

That’s awesome. Well done. I’ve been thinking about an upgrade too. You’re still on windows 10 right? I feel like I remember reading that if we upgrade to windows 11, our computers can no longer talk to the cnc. I think it’s next year when Microsoft will no longer support windows 10? Still waking up here so I might not have that right.

I did the memory upgrade as soon as I received my SR-44 in 2018. Although the Vectric software isn't "generally" heavy in memory usage, I suspect it doesn't hurt to have more for rendering the 3D views at the highest resolutions. My machine computer has an SSD and I don't really store much data on it, so I haven't felt the need to add more.

The 1 tb M.2 drive was relatively inexpensive and the motherboard was capable of handling it so I figured that, since I had the computer opened up, I might as well upgrade it. The old drive is now a backup. It was a 250mb SSD but the new M.2 drive seems to be much faster. Yes, Aspire isn't very memory intensive so the increase from 4mb to 12mb probably wasn't much of a benefit there. But, with all of the new disk space, I can now install some other programs that do use a lot of memory. That keeps me from running back and forth from the shop to the house to make corrections. Sometimes I use "remote desktop" to connect to the house computer and vice-versa. It uses a lot of memory also.

Makes sense for your needs, Steve. I don't usually do any serious drawing, etc., on the Windows machine in the shop that serves as the CNC controller unless it's for something quick and dirty. I do my design and general toolpathing work in my office in the house on my Mac under Parallels and then park the files on OneDrive so I can pick them up on the computer in the shop. So mostly just tweaking there. When I'm done with a file, I can remove it from the shop machine after re-uploading and replacing (to capture the tweaks) which keeps drive space utilization way down.

            Steve & Jim,

have either of you upgraded the graphics card in the PC? I want to get the best resolution i can ( I plan on installing a LED Television as a main Monitor on the wall) and think i may need a better graphics card.

            thoughts?

            Thanks,
            Clint

I use a 43" 4k TV as a monitor, and the built-in graphics handle it just fine. I'd guess it's probably only running at 30Hz, but I'm not using it for gaming or anything.

The computer in my shop is primarily used for running the machine and WinCNC. Occasionally I will open a project to make changes but, I do most of the project development on the computer in the house. WniCNC is mostly text based and doesn't need a high-end graphic card. Just make sure it's compatible with your monitor, eg. resolution, refresh rate, etc.

No. It runs my 25" Dell UltraSharp just fine. Unless the TV is 4K you'll not be improving resolution over the original 19" scree that came with the machine
