Double Helix Candle Holders

Last year I was honored by Vectric when they featured a set of my candle holders in one of their newsletters. They stated that I had used a bit of an unconventional approach to the design so I thought they needed a bit of an overhaul. I redesigned them entirely by creating my own components and used 2-rail sweeps along with the wrap gadget in Aspire 10.5. They have 2 twisting spirals (double helix) that are separate from each other so they appear hollow in the middle. They're for my daughter's birthday later this month.

Nice work Steve, I looked into this many years ago at a rough level, I remember doing a 4 start twist.

Thank you, Mick, Joe. I used Zebrawood thinking the contrasting light and dark areas would look good on the spirals. It does, but not as striking as anticipated.

About 6 hours for the spirals and about 1 hour for the base. I used a rough and finish toolpath for the spirals and a moulding toolpath on the base. The base has a larger pocket for the base of the spirals and a smaller 1/2" hole for the post on the end. After gluing I used a small brass screw from the bottom. I don't think they will come apart any time soon.

If anyone would like the files I'd be happy to share them.
