  • 3D Fish cut on My Recoil

I cut this fish from the Vectric Bookend project. I imported the fish file as a 3d model and unwrapped it, tool path it. and cut it on the Recoil. Roughed it with a .25 end mill 40% step over, finished with a .125 Ball Nose 10% step over, 300 inches per minute.

That turned out nice. That is definitely one of the better items I've seen done on the recoil.

That's alot of blanks. I may be interested in some maple or other hardwood if you are going to sell some and are willing to ship.

The blank I used was 3x3x10 inches appx. The only thing I noticed is where I created the Zero Plane, (See tutorial F14) the tube through the fish, it makes the tail fatter then I would like it to be. I am going to rework the file and cut it and see if it can be made better.

Tommy as for the blanks you have. The biggest issue with small blanks is where they mount to the face plate or chuck, you run the risk of your spindle or collet hitting the metal plate. Depending on the length of your bit. (Go ahead TR make the bit comment) Also make sure that when the spindle is at the ends of the cuts that the square ends of the blanks do not interfere with the rotation of the recoil.

                        Happy turning

Tommy: All of those blanks you mentioned you have' are they solid or are they glue-ups of 4/4 or thicker stock?
