  • Newbie Needs Help !!!

    Hello Everyone,

My name is George. I am in the fashion business in NYC. I just got a Stinger 1 with the 220V spindle about 2 weeks ago. My progress has been super slow because trying to learn about the machine with fashion week around the corner has been a challenge. Since Camaster does not have the training and support is overwhelmed (due to Covid) I'm hoping someone in the group would be will "to hold my hand" until I'm up and running. I would be more than happy to pay or exchange if anyone would be so gracious.

The primary purpose of this machine is to make custom tooling and jigs for fabric manipulation. I will attach some photos for you to see.

I have watched a bunch of videos from Camaster and Vectric but none are a complete start to finish so Im worried about any gaps in the process.
Currently, Im at the point where I am planning out my spoil board.

    Regards,

    George

It might help folks here if you can expand on what you mean by "custom tooling and jigs for fabric manipulation"?
What are the jigs made from? How are they used to form or cut fabric?

As for end to end videos you should focus on the VCarve design process first so maybe check out Mark Lindsay's Youtube channel.
    Good luck.
    Pete

Thank you Pete. I will check out those videos. At this point I'm still trying to figure out how to just do basic things. For example, How do I surface the sacrificial MDF that I will attach to the machine?

Hi George. Check out this video from Mick Martin, a long-time contributor to this forum. He wrote a small program called Spoilboard Wizard that he offers for free. The link for the app is in the video description in YouTube: Spoilboard Wizard - YouTube

Thanks everyone :-) I watched the suggest videos all weekend and they cleared up a lot of the confusions.

I used the spoilboard program. It wants to always cut .060 instead of .010. Any idea why?

Probably because that might be the default setup in the program. It's easy to change before you write out the file. I've written out several versions, including one that's only .005" for a quick clean. Once you create your file(s), you don't have to actually go back into the spoilboard program (Assuming Mick's) unless you want to create a different depth of cut or changed to a different size machine.

                  Jim,
Would you mind helping me out on how to fix this issue?

You would be better off by creating a simple rectangle in VCarve slightly larger than the size of your spoilboard and then creating a pocket toolpath for your cutter with a .01" depth of cut.
                    It's the perfect first job.

When you create the cutting file using the spoilboard utility (Mick's), just change the cut depth to what you want before you write out the file. Make the file name indicative of the depth of cut for that particular cut file.
