  • Waveform Wall Hanging

Recently finished a new (for me) type of project for a ten year anniversary gift. Apparently the ten year event gift might be aluminum/tin. Best I came up with was Rowmark 2-ply plastic that looks like aluminum finish on the top. Anyway, their wedding featured Annies Song and this waveform view was their request.

I pulled up the song on the computer and did a screen shot of the waveform, saved one channel as a screen print. Then, imported that screen shot into Aspire and used the Trace Bitmap to create vectors.

After lots of experimenting to get the cuts right in this new to me material, I used a profile cut to carve the vector around the wave shape perimeter. Then, the vertical pocket cut having 0.050 inch spacing for the center of the waves. The material has 0.003 inch aluminum color on the top surface and black underneath for the total thickness of 1/16 inch. Carved at a depth of 0.010 inch.

Cut using a 30 degree vee bit having a 0.020 flat tip.

Overall size is 51 by 21 inches with frame.

I think it turned out pretty good given what my first cuts looked like.

                Thanks for all your comments.

It was fun to experiment and actually have it turn out okay. I now learned that they make a 2 ply having a clear top coat material. You would carve from the back. After carving, you can paint in any color you want to appear through the carving. That would have been fun here because then the peaks of the waves could have been painted red, or some other color.

By the way, it is now hanging on a wall in Pennsylvania, for those from that area of the country (smile).
