  • Clock using an elevator gear

My best friend is an elevator mechanic and retiring soon. Friends on the job gave him a solid brass gear from an elevator and he asked if I could design a clock to mount inside. The gear weighs over 40 lbs. and is about 20" in diameter. He wanted something rustic looking and picked out a sassafras board when we went to the lumber yard. It carved ok, but the pocket around the numbers hit some knots in the wood causing some of them to chip, so I flattened them and cut the numbers separately from a piece of sapele and glued them in place. Because of the weight, I picked out an AC powered clock mechanism so it wouldn't need to be taken off the wall to change the battery.
