  • PVC moulding at Home Depot

    Howdy,
I picked up one of these today.

    https://www.homedepot.com/p/Royal-Mo...2003/100059569

Any tips on working with this material? Would I use this type of cement to join two boards together?

    https://www.lowes.com/pd/Oatey-Handy...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

I don't have a particular project in mind for this material currently, just wanted to have a new material to play around with.

I have an 'o' flute cutter that I imagine would work well for this.

many thanks and all the best

You can also buy the PVC in sheets which is what I do..
Comes in 1/2" and 3/4" and possibly 1" thicknesses.
    2' x 4' or 4' x 8' panels.
Cuts like butter. Takes paint well too - I use Krylon Fusion.

Many thanks. I wish I could but my local Home Depot and Lowe's don't stock it and I can't even seem to order it through them online. I tried Ace, McCoys, 84 Lumber, and Builders FirstSource (all in my town) but to no avail. I know I can go into Austin to Regal Plastics but wanted to play around with a small amount before I get a full sheet. Any other online retailers you like?

Thanks for the tip about Krylon Fusion.

Do you use the 'o' flute cutters?

      cheers

Yes. O flute up-cut bits work fine with PVC.

I use Kleer Lumber - been using it for years. The glue is expensive if it's specific to that brand but I hardly ever needed to use it as I do historical house signs and buy one 5/4 x 12" x 20' piece at a time. I use Sherwin Williams top of the line exterior latex paint for the lettering and have never had a problem. The only thing I've run into is that very often the pieces at the lumber yard can be dirty and when they are pulled out of the bin they can scratch from a piece of sand/dirt. I have found that running a heat gun over the scratch will remove it.

That's great to know. Many thanks. Do you know of any online dealers for that? Cheers

The 1/2" sheets of PVC from Home Depot work well for signage and takes pretty much any paint well. I use 1/8", 1/4", and 3/8" O-flute bits for pocketing and profiling and regular V-bits for carving. 12000rpm and 120ipm on the Vcarve does nicely, 18000rpm and 200-240ipm on the pockets and profiles cuts great. Here are a couple of signs recently done. Coated in Chroma-Craft Rustina and then Vcarved.
