Abs and some processes can emit this,, gotta be a big printer, i have one but not in my house, you are heating or causing reaction of materials with these things,, i see on many 3dp forums people complaining about abs gasses

Here is the deal (I think). There is a company called Glowforge who is selling a laser cutter/engraver and calling it a 3-D Laser Printer because it is able to cut out pieces that can make 3-D objects. Never mind that, by their definition, a table saw is a 3-D cabinet "printer". This is strictly an advertising ploy as the machine just cuts in an X-Y plane like every other laser cutter. I believe that is the machine that may have caused the death of those 2 people. The manufacturer of the laser does not emphasize that the laser must thoroughly exhausted outside in order to prevent CO poisoning or cyanide poisoning due to cutting certain plastics. Google "Glowforge" if you want to read the largest pile of advertising poop you have ever read in your life.

Maybe now, Glowforge will be made to stop calling this plain old laser cutter a 3-D laser printer.

You would think people would smell the noxious, nauseating fumes before they become lethal, maybe they were sleeping.

Read about Gloforge some time back, kickstart project that was chronically plagued with problems and many unhappy investors.

Offhand Art seems you have a point, a printer extrudes heated ABS and generally does not blast out toxic fumes like a cutter would. Probably a mixup in terminology, have checked a few more sources and they all say the same thing. Or could a malfunction of a printer be possible ?

In any case very sad and sobering news, talented couple RIP. They need to get the details in this case right and publish to warn others, will update if I find anything else.

edit: Saw mcgrew link, not conclusive but backs up 100% what Art was thinking.
Highly unlikely an actual printer caused this, rather an engraver which are well known to generate toxic fumes that need to be vented.
