Default Fun recoil project

Had a newel post to make. Hatteras lighthouse design. Started with a 12" poplar log on the lathe to get round. (finish size-10" diameter, 48" long) Carefully measured breaks and roughed out on the lathe to save time on the recoil. Was successful and only had to rough out octagonal shape on recoil. Finish cut was 2.5 hrs. A lot of sanding to get the fuzzies out of the V carve cuts due to being green lumber but finished product looked nice. Will post pictures once customer finish paints it.

Sweet, but the flooring guy (and whoever keeps the floor clean) is gonna hate the intersection of the octagon with the trim on the stairs. Maybe a flat base under it with an angle back to the (narrower) trim?
