Default Round Nose

Would a 1/2" ball nose produce a similar cut (1/4" radius) as a round nose/core box router bit?

i typically use a whiteside 1408 ($30) round nose around the shop for round bottom work. i see the 1/2" CNC straight ball nose is $100+. they do have spiral sides though.

does anyone use them enough to share any insight as to their qualities, before i make the plunge, sorta speak?

Very similar profile and much cleaner cutting with the spiral. Some core box bits may have wonky profiles at the tip, especially inexpensive ones. Quality ball nose tooling should be somewhat consistent in that respect. IMHO.

I use a 1/2" ballnose for a lot of my furniture work. Works VERY well. I can cut a full width pass 1" deep at 300ipm with that tool. Gives a very clean cut.
