Tim...
My favorites use insert tooling. Especially if you plan on surfacing wood products (vs. MDF etc.) They are a little more going in, but prove to be the best deal over time. I have purchased a couple dozen Magnate bits, and I really like their prices, but in the long run, you need to be careful as their V bits seldom are ground at the advertised angle, and I have also seen inaccuracies in their straight brazed bits also. Here is a link of my preferred: http://www.toolstoday.com/p-5785-ins...outer-bit.aspx

I am with Gary on this one. I love insert bits, it will cost you more scratch up front, but the replacement knifes are reasonable and each knife has four sides. I like the Amana 2+2 version of what Gary shows http://www.amanatool.com/cncroutingdetails/rc-2252.html and comes as large as 3.125" US Router Tools also sells insert bits http://www.usroutertools.com/ and you can get a discount from Camaster if you own a CAMaster.

I love insert tooling, but you have to buy the quality stuff. The inserts need to be perfectly indexed to the body. I bought some cheap stuff and there was no way to get the inserts lined up correctly, so once I changed inserts the tool never worked properly and I ended up throwing them out.
I've tried the 2+2 spoilboad cutters, as well as the 2 insert cutters. The 2+2 design tends to clog up and burn quickly when surfacing a large top. The more simple 2 insert cutters seem to work better for me. They don't stay sharp for long when surfacing a 4x8 MDF top. I get 2-3 surfaces before rotating my cutters.

I have the Amana 1.5". Not impressed with it. The horizontal inserts don't have a way for the chips to clear and they get clogged up and burn. The inserts don't have a positive seat either, so it's very hard to line them up evenly. It cuts about 1/3 of the spoilboard before leaving burn marks (I cut at 600ipm and 18000 rpm). I'd be interested to know how a larger 2+2 cuts.
